    The digging bar I use was forged by my great great grandfather from a wagon axle. I also use a chisel from a coal mine about 3 ft long and a short handled sledge. I hit the top of the chisel a few times, smack the sides to get it to wiggle, repeat til I get the depth I need, pull the chisel out and drive my posts. We gots lots of sandstone here, if we're lucky there might be some dirt too so the extra effort with the chisel saves the effort of arm breaking post driving through 4-6 inch stone slabs.

    Hey, I know this video was from a year ago, but could you elaborate a little bit on what you did to the soil underneath? I’m in a zone five, in the Midwest, clay soil, which it looks like that’s what you’re digging in and I’ve never been able to grow a root crop! Onions, garlic, potatoes, sweet potatoes. You name it. More advice you could give would be so appreciated.

  • @actionjksn
    @actionjksn 2 дня назад

    Using the two temporary screws to prevent it from moving is effective but it is way too slow. What you're supposed to do is do not start with the board on the line. You put it about an eighth of an inch or so short of the line and then when you drive the screws in it will move over to the line. If you can angle your screw up more than 45° the board will not move quite as far. But you always need to place the 2x4 off the line just short of it to compensate for it moving. If you guesstimate wrong on where to place it from the line, just take note of how far off you were and make an adjustment. I've been remodeling for about 30 something years and it is true that we tend to use more screws on framing, I also worked on a framing crew back in the 90s, that is brutal work. I'm turning 60 years old in a few days so I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to do this work full time. Doing it every day is very hard on your body. I know that on paper nails have more sheer strength than screws but in reality when shear forces are put on the structure the fasteners do not share off anyway they pull out. That is the failure point and I know this because I've seen the tests with hydraulic jigs used to put shear forces on framing components. The nails or screws will pull out part way and then bend over. The screws are far more resistant to pulling out and it takes more pounds of force to make the screws fail when shear forces are put on them. You cannot put shear forces on a 2X4 structure and actually sheer off the fasteners. They pull out about an inch or so and then bend over. Project Farm actually did some tests on this that are pretty good. He used multiple different kinds of screws and nails, and put different kinds of forces on the fasteners.

The brace is a 1x4 so that's 3/4". Jigsaw reqires a drill hole so maybe a combination of jigsaw and multitool.

    Done this plenty when you need a quick thin shim. It’s pretty hard to avoid saw marks where the cuts meet even when the saw is square. Its probably safer than trying to rip through pushing with a skinny stick. A flat ways 2x4 with a trailing edge stop jig as long as the strips you need is safer.

    I would like to suggest to you and your viewers to NEVER pour a flammable liquid inside or near a structure or vehicle. My reasoning is it could spill, or catch fire for a number of reasons, and then you have what can be a serious situation. Step away 10 feet or more and make the pour outside; then if something happens you are not in a life or death struggle to save your garage or truck. A spill of gasoline in a driveway, away from anything valuable is an inconvenience, even if it catches fire. A spill in your shed, as visible @7:00 would be a major problem or even an inferno. Just pour fuel in a place you can step away from without effort or worry. Also, don't store gasoline in glass jugs.

    In “another world” a long time ago, on our farm, I participated in yearly hay harvesting. It had to be hung up from ground on wooden stakes, some 8 or 9 ft long. The stakes were about a forearm thick, naturally thinning to the top and sharpened at the thicker end for 8 to 12 inches. We had to use those digging poles or rods, just like you showed, to make the holes for our stakes. The method was exactly as you show. On the fat section of our stake, there was a 6 to 7 inch cross member that would support the first bunch of hay some 18 inches above the ground and then the whole remaining length of the stake was loaded with additional hay, crisscrossing. With air gap under, the hay was let dry for about two weeks without catching mold. Finally the dry hay was collected and brought to one or more barns for winter feeding of our 6 dozen cows and a dozen horses. One thing, though - working at the “receiving end” when the fay was brought in, I developed a lasting opinion that I still relate Earl Gray tea taste or smell to the smell of our dry hay, which every year for a week or so every day penetrated my nose and throat. I like all OTHER tea flavors, but Earl Gray.

      The method of drying hay that you describe is something I remember reading about in Farmstead magazine back in the 1970s. I was fascinated by it and saved the article. I never knew anyone who actually did it. Where in the world your farm was.
